Travel Rule - How are we dealing with it? We're adding more privacy.

The Situation

If you've been following Australian fintech news, you may have seen announcements about AUSTRAC introducing new requirements for Digital Currency Exchanges (DCEs). The Travel Rule is real, it's coming into effect, and it affects how Bitcoin gets paid to you through GPIB.

We want to give you a straight summary of what's changing, what it means for you, and what we're doing about it.

What Is the Travel Rule?

The Travel Rule is a compliance requirement designed to bring cryptocurrency payments in line with the surveillance requirements that already apply to bank transfers.

Here's the gist: When you send money via traditional banking, your bank collects information about you (name, address, account details) and transmits it through intermediaries to the receiving bank. This creates an audit trail for regulators and helps prevent money laundering and financial crime.

The Travel Rule extends this concept to Bitcoin. When a Digital Currency Exchange (DCE) sends Bitcoin to another registered exchange on your behalf, that DCE must collect and transmit your personal information through intermediaries to comply with AUSTRAC regulations.

Why Does It Matter?

For Australian Bitcoin users, the Travel Rule means:

  • If your current payout address is at another exchange (like CoinSpot, Swyftx, or Kraken), you'll need to update it
  • You'll need to declare what type of address you're using (personal wallet or exchange)
  • GPIB needs to verify ownership of addresses before sending Bitcoin to them

Our Position: We Value Your Privacy

This is where GPIB's philosophy comes into sharp focus.

As Bitcoiners, we believe in sound money and financial sovereignty. We don't want to collect additional information about you beyond what's necessary, and we certainly don't want to send that information to other businesses through intermediaries.

Here's what we've decided: GPIB will not support sending your Bitcoin to other registered DCEs.

Instead, we're pivoting to a simpler model:

  • We'll only send Bitcoin to addresses that you certify as personal and that belong to you alone
  • If you don't have a personal wallet set up yet, we'll hold your Bitcoin securely in your own GPIB custodial wallet until you do
  • Once you've added a personal address and completed the Travel Rule declaration, your wages will flow directly to that address

This approach protects your privacy while keeping everything compliant with AUSTRAC requirements.

Introducing HD Wallets: Privacy That Keeps Growing

We're not just solving for compliance — we're solving for your privacy.

HD Wallets (Hierarchical Deterministic wallets) use a single extended public key to generate a new Bitcoin address every week. This means:

  • You nominate a single HD key once
  • GPIB derives a new address for each pay cycle automatically
  • You receive Bitcoin to a different address every week
  • Observers (like blockchain analysts) can't easily link your weekly pays together

This is powerful for privacy. Instead of reusing the same address and revealing your full income stream on the blockchain, each payment lands in a fresh address. Your financial details stay private.

If you're concerned about privacy, HD Wallets are a game-changer. If you're not, your standard personal wallet works just fine.

What This Means for Your Bitcoin Pay

If your current address is another exchange: You'll need to add a personal Bitcoin address. This takes 5 minutes.

In the meantime: We'll continue to process your regular pays and send the Bitcoin to your own GPIB custodial wallet. Nothing is lost — your Bitcoin is safe with us.

Once you've updated your address: You'll complete a quick declaration (less than a minute), and your future wages will flow directly to your personal wallet.

The Action Steps

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Login to the GPIB portal at https://www.getpaidinbitcoin.com.au/login
  2. Complete the popup to let us know who owns the existing addresses on your account
  3. Then add another if required — or set up your HD Wallet for automatic privacy

That's it. Done and dusted and privacy protected.

Your Bitcoin Is Safe While You Update

We know compliance can feel heavy. But here's the reassurance: nothing is lost.

We'll hold your Bitcoin pays in a secure GPIB custodial wallet on your behalf until you're ready. Once you've updated your address and signed the declaration, you can sweep those funds directly to your personal wallet.

Your money is yours. We're just holding it securely.

What's Coming Next from GPIB

After many years running lean, we now have two people in full-time development. Things are moving fast.

Bits — GPIB Xero Integration

We've built Bits — an app that integrates GPIB with Xero Payroll. This allows employers to offer Bitcoin wages directly through their payroll system, with zero cryptocurrency exposure for the business.

Bits is currently invite-only while we work with select partners. Request an invite if your employer uses Xero and you'd like to explore Bitcoin wages at scale.

Employment Hero Integration — Coming Soon

We're launching GPIB integration with Employment Hero (EH) for limited testing with select partners in the coming weeks.

If your employer uses EH and you'd like an early invite, add your email and we'll be in touch.

The Bottom Line

The Travel Rule is a regulatory requirement, but we're using it as an opportunity to strengthen your privacy and simplify how Bitcoin wages work.

You're not locked into anything. Your Bitcoin, your address, your choice. GPIB is here to make it seamless.

Thanks for being part of this journey. We'll be in touch with updates on new features, partners, and what we're building next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need to update my address immediately? A: You can take your time, but we recommend doing it this week. In the interim, your Bitcoin is safe in your GPIB custodial wallet.

Q: What if I don't have a personal wallet? A: We'll hold your Bitcoin safely until you do. Check out our wallet guide to find one that works for you.

Q: Is HD Wallet mandatory? A: No. It's optional and designed for privacy-conscious users. A standard personal wallet works perfectly fine.

Q: Will this affect my tax reporting? A: No. The declaration is purely for compliance. Tax treatment of your Bitcoin wages remains unchanged.

Q: Can I use an exchange address? A: Not with GPIB. We only support personal wallets. If you've been using an exchange address, now's the time to set up your own wallet.

Q: How do I know my Bitcoin is safe? A: Your GPIB custodial wallet is managed by GPIB using industry-standard security practices. Once you sweep to your personal wallet, you control the private keys entirely.
